Let’s Get Cliterate

What you may think is your clitoris is only a tiny part of it. Your pleasure organ is bigger and more powerful than you might know – and is likely tied to the G-spot!

I sure had no idea – I vividly recall accidentally missing the one class in 5th grade where my teacher went over periods for the girls – separate from not remembering learning anything in our awkward 8th grade special sex ed assembly. In hindsight I imagine only ovulation was portrayed and discussed anyway, with a focus on preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases rather than on feeling GOOD. Fast forward 35 years later, and here I am studying female anatomy for the first time, marveling at its design.

Perhaps I missed nothing, as it turns out it wasn’t until 1998 that the clitoris was fully mapped, and only in 2016 that a 3-D life-sized model was made. How could I learn about something that was not even known medically?

VERY Basic Female Anatomy

If you’re curious like me, here is an EXTREMELY simplified version of female anatomy:

The external female genitalia is the vulva. The folds of the vulva are the labia. Within the labia are the clitoris, the urethra where pee comes out, and the vagina where menstrual flow exits the body (and fingers, sex toys, penises, and more can enter). The shape, size, and color of the parts of the vulva varies greatly between each of us.

I’ll admit I didn’t know until recently the difference between vulva, labia, and vagina – they were all just terms for “down there”. (I’ve been meaning to explore with a mirror as is often suggested, to become better acquainted with my own intimate body parts, so as to be more informed when discussing with my doctor and my partner.)

The Rub on the Nub

The “nub” located at the top of the vulva where the folds of the labia meet, closest to the belly, is the external part of the clitoris. It differs in each of us; it can be easily visible for some, or for others it may be tucked inside the hood.

I was astonished to learn the clitoris extends about 4 inches inside the body. It’s shaped like a wishbone, splitting into two “legs”. It also has two bulbs attached from the “V” of the wishbone that wrap around the urethra and vagina. These are actually similar components to the penis, along with erectile tissue which “harden” when aroused – the bulbs can swell with blood to double in size. Medical researchers recently counted 10,000 nerve fibers along the clitoris, which all plug into the nub! No wonder it is capable of generating the most intense sensations in the body.

Recent research also suggests the erogenous G-spot that lies 2-3 inches inside the front wall of the vaginal canal may actually be where those clitoral bulbs surround it – meaning the G-spot may actually be part of the clitoris, stimulated internally!

All of this shows the nub is only the tip of the iceberg; so much powerful pleasure lies beneath the surface.
